Designing Anti-Racism Education

Thank you to everyone who participated with us in #LeadLAP last week as we started to take action in rethinking our curriculum to ensure we are intentionally planning, designing, and delivering curriculum that is anti-racist.  To see last week’s conversation and the great resources shared click HERE.

This week in #LeadLAP we are continuing the curriculum conversation, and we hope you will join us on Twitter at 9:30 am on Saturday for te chat hosted by Traci and Dawn. To hear about this week’s plan watch our video below.

If you have been following along with us and watching our videos on a regular basis, you see the conversation we have when we press “record”. What you don’t see is the very authentic conversation among four friends that typically happens before that moment. This week, though, we wanted to let you in on a little bit of what we chatted about before Dawn pressed record on Wednesday.

The reality is all four of us are exhausted. We are struggling with all of the uncertainty that this year will bring. We are concerned that anti-racism work might get lost in all of the work educators have to do to prepare for teaching during a global pandemic. We are all working hard but also wondering if we are doing enough. Each of us has had to take a bit of a break. We have all tried to practice some form of self-care in our own ways.  Each of us is doing our best to stay positive, to stay strong, but we misstep sometimes.

We also discussed that these are signs of the possible burnout and setbacks that we have talked about in our #LeadLAP chats. The exhaustion and frustration are real, but we have to find a way to push through it. How we do that is unique to each of us, and how YOU do that will be unique to you.  But our plea to you is please find a way to push through. Take a break if you need to, share your frustrations with trusted friends, exercise more, read a book just for fun, binge watch a tv show, take more naps! But commit to staying in the fight and coming back to this critical work again and again with even more strength. Our children are counting on you.

We do hope that you will join us on Saturday and stay committed to being a part of this awesome #GritCrewEDU We are SO proud of all of you for showing up, engaging in the conversation, and taking action. Below you will find the topics we will be discussing this week. And again… you can count on Traci and Dawn to share incredible resources to help all of us get better at designing anti-racism curriculum for our students.  We’re looking forward to seeing you there.
